Geography

Year 7, 8 and 9

Geography is a dynamic and contemporary subject. Throughout Years 7-9 every student will gain knowledge and understanding of how human interaction with the physical environment has helped to shape the world as it is today.  Students will understand Britain’s place in the real world and will be given opportunities and encouragement to ask questions, think critically, produce reasoned arguments, create solutions and take part in decision-making exercises. Geography encourages students to consider how their lives and their actions impact on the future of the planet and helps prepare them as well-rounded global citizens in our ever-changing world.

Year 10 and 11

At KS4 students develop knowledge and understanding of the complex interactions between physical processes and human actions. Places are studied at a range of scales from local to global. Learning at GCSE is largely enquiry based and challenges us to think critically about a variety of situations be it over-population, global warming or energy use, taking into account the bigger picture and drawing reasoned conclusions . The development of numeracy skills and mapping skills are an essential part of the course as well as decision-making exercises which find students considering the options for sustainable management of precious resources. Teaching styles are varied and students will find themselves working independently, in pairs or in groups to develop their thinking skills. Geography is a contemporary subject and as such students are kept up to date with the most recent research and information via the internet and academic journals. Most importantly, geography prepares students to become well-rounded global citizens of our ever-changing world.
