Much has been written and discussed recently about the breakdown of community in this country. As global politics becomes more polarised between left and right and extended families spread across the country and often the globe, defining what a community is, let alone how it operates is extremely challenging. An effective community has three primary functions: it gives people a sense of agency and belonging, it rallies around and supports those most in need and it becomes more than the sum of its parts, drawing its strength through collective endeavour and care.
This school is a true community and is unique, both in its inclusiveness, and the way that it unites those from different races, religions, backgrounds and circumstances for the collective good of our young people. This weekend we will reflect on our colleague, injured so badly in Thursday’s accident, and you will feel as I have, a sense of hurt to our proud community. Our prayers are with Jackie and her family.
